ALLENTOWN, N.J.--Boyd Martin of Cochanville, Pa., had a spectacular weekend at the Jersey Fresh International three-day event, virtually sweeping the board by winning three of the four division offered, winning the CCI3* on Long Island T, the CIC3* on Kyra and the CCI2* on On Cue.
Martin scored 25.4 in the dressage phase and was never headed on Long Island T, going clean cross country but adding 10.8 time faults and then having one fence down in stadium jumping to finish on 40.2, with Caroline Martin on Islandwood Captain Jack placing second on 43,10 and Lynn Symanski finishing third on RF Cool Play. also finishing on 43.10.
Martin had been first and second going into stadium jumping, but he had four fences down on Ray Price to finish 10th.
"Long Island T is a German sport horse that I bought a year go," said Martin. "He got to the intermediate level, but then he was struggling a bit. It took longer than I thought it would to move up."
Long island T had been having trouble in the jumping phase, but Martin found he needed more support, and then the pair started to click.
"The last couple of months we really got in sync," said Martin. "He's wonderful on the flat."
Jersey Fresh served as a qualifier for this fall's World Equestrian Games in Tryon, N.C.
"HE IS QUALIFIED now, but he's a bit green," said Martin. I'm just trying to get as many as I can qualified and then let the selector sort it out."
in the CIC3* on Kyra, Martin was tied for tied for fourth on 29.8 after dressage, was clean cross country with 4.8 time penalties to move up to second and double clean on Sunday to win on 34.6, with Olympic teammate and good friend Phillip Dutton on Kevin Keane's Sportsfield Candy second on 39.8 and Jenny Caras on Fernhill Fortitude third on 41.8.
Dutton of West Grove, Pa., is riding Sportsfield Candy while Dr. Keane recuperates from another injury, but Dutton said Keane would be back in the saddle soon again.
"This was Kyra's first CIC3*," said Martin. "She's a very careful jumper, almost a little too cautious. She's very good in stadium jumping. I have a complete set of cross country jumps in my field at home, so I'm just going to concentrate on cross country schooling with her."
In the CCI2*, Martin on On Cue again led throughout the competition, scoring 25.70 in dressage, adding a clean cross country with no time penalties and a double clear cross country to finish on his dressage score of 25.7
Caroline Martin finished second again, this time on Jump Jet, and she also finished on her dressage score of 29.2, and Alexandra Knowles was third on Casarino, finishing on35.9
"On Cue is a beautiful French mare," said Martin. "She was double clear in cross country and stadium. She was all class in all three phases. She's a very strong prospect for the future."
Jersey Fresh suffered from the same unsettled weather as did Willowdale Steeplechase.
Thee were thunderstorms around Saturday, but the cross country was finished before storms hit, and Sunday was very chilly and damp with showers, as you can see from the picture of Martin on Kyra.
Martin is going next to Fair Hill and then to Bromont, Canada which also has a CCI3*.
