Doug King

Doug King is a third generation horse trainer. He is part of a long family tradition of training race horses, both on the flat and steeplechasing - a tradition he now continues from the 55-acre Kimberton, Pa., farm that he shares with his wife, Martha.

Doug KingSeveral years ago, King made the decision to build a racing business, buying weanlings every year, and he now trains young horses by quality sires.

The farm offers all of the advantages of a classic European-style training facility, with a state of the art training track, designed with all weather footing.

“Our training track was modeled after the rings built for the London Olympics, designed to handle any amount of rain. Our track is never sloppy so we don’t lose training days due to bad weather,“ said King.

The farm boasts a beautiful, seven furlong, uphill turf gallop, alongside a sand gallop for inclement weather, reminiscent of the best training facilities in England. In addition, “the property has what I call ‘the mountain’ ” said King. “It’s a three furlong steep hill for trotting and easy galloping or blowouts. The hill really builds muscle on the horses.”

A new Kraft 6-horse covered walker also adds to the fitness and training amenities found at Royal Crown Stables, LLC.

The farm’s picturesque main barn has wonderful air flow, featuring front-back stall ventilation for each horse.

With over 30 stalls, abundant grass paddocks, smaller sand paddocks for horses in race preparation or on lay-up, the facility meets the needs of horses in many different stages of training.

Jump training also figures prominently in the facility, with a beautiful arena equipped with GGT footing, complemented by countless natural hurdles and logs throughout the farm, as well as a grass jump field.

On the back 30 acres of the farm is a meadow by the pond with very soft footing, even in the middle of summer, which is great for figure-eight galloping and teaching horses lead changes.

Royal Crown Stables, LLC also has 6 stalls at Fair Hill Training Center, the preeminent thoroughbred training center in the country.

“Fair Hill enables us to obtain recorded works and to get the horses through the starting gate to get their gate cards, in a quality setting that is unrivaled in the industry," said King.

Contact Doug for a tour of the facilities, to see the horses and to discuss training, rehab and ownership/syndication opportunities.
