AACHEN, Germany--The U.S. Eventing Team is fourth after the first two phases of competition at the CHIO Aachen UBS-Cup CCIO4*-S.
Will Coleman on Off The Record The team of Caroline Pamukcu of Springtown, Pa., on HSH Blake, Phillip Dutton of West Grove, Pa., on Possante, William Coleman of Ocala, Fla., on Off The Record and Boyd Martin of Cochranville, Pa., on Commando 3 are on a total score of 107.6 penalties heading into Saturday's final cross country phase.
Pamukcu had a confident, mistake free dressage test to score of 32.6 but added eight faults in stadium jumping to score 40.6 ahead of cross-country.
Dutton scored 34.2 in dressage and added four jumping faults in the second phase of the day to be on 38.20.
Coleman, the winner of the 2021 CCIO4*-S at Aachen, scored a 35.6 in dressage but had a needed clear in the show jumping phase to stay on his dressage score and keep the team within reach of the podium.
Martin scored 33.8 in dressage and in show jumping phase was clean to keep the team competitive in the standings, 16.4 points behind the leading team of Great Britain,, who is on 91.2.
NEW ZEALAND is second on 94.4, followed by Germany on 9.1, the U.S., 107.6, Switzerland, 109.9, Ireland, 115, Australia, 115.1, and France, 117.
Martin is 10th individually, only 6.5 points behind the leader, Tm Price of New Zealand.
"I like it; it's what I expected," said Martin of the cross country track. "Giuseppe [Della Chiesa] starts us out nice with a couple of straight galloping fences, then everything you can think of is there. Corners in the water, mounds with a coffin, and some tough angles at the end. It'll be a hard course, especially if you go fast, and definitely influential."
Dutton, who is also competing as an individual on Denim, scored 35.9 in dressage and was clean jumping.
IN DRIVING, Chester Weber was second in dressage but finished 15th in cones with the marathon coming Satturday morning.
Boyd Exell of Australia led in both dressage and cones be be in the lead going into the marathon.
IN DRESSAGE, the U.S. team of Kasey Perry-Glass on Heartbeat W P, Benjamin Ebeling on Bellena, Jennifer Williams on Joppe K and Kevin Kohmann on Dunensee finished eighth of nine teams on 206.436.
Germany won on 232.065, Belgium was second on 219,804 and Sweden was third on 216.935.
In the Grand Prix Special, Marcus Orlob on Jane was fourth on 2044.50 behind winner Ingrid Klimke of Germany on Vayron NRW on 5844.50, Henri Ruoste of Finland on Tiffany's Diamond, 3744.50, and Isabel Freeze of Norway on Total Hope OLD on 2844.50.
