Gentle Giants was formed to facilitate the rescue of draft and draft cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
Horse slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses.
Draft horses are most at risk as they attract a higher profit for the meat buyers due to their size and weight. In an effort to prevent drafts from getting sold for meat, we attend the same public auctions and outbid the meat buyers.
Bringing horses home from auction is only the first step, many of the horses that we rescue are in various stages of neglect and require rehabilitation.
We are equipped to handle a variety of different ailments, meaning we are able to take in horses that otherwise would not have a second chance at life.
It is incredibly rewarding for us to see horses that were destined for slaughter living full and happy lives
in their new homes.
We would not be able to do the amazing work we do without the assistance of our donors and volunteers.
These wonderful people make a difference in the lives of these wonderful horses every day.
