Inexpensive technology available that could prevent catastrophic breakdowns in race horses

UNIONVILLE, Pa.--Thoroughbred racing may well disappear unless someway is found to eliminate catastrophic breakdowns.

Jeff SederJeff SederAmazingly ,the technology to achieve that exists and only needs what in racing economy is a very small amount of venture capital to bring it into use.

Racing stables annually buy a few top yearlings for over $1million, and an investment of just $900,000 would develop a hand-held, battery powered machine that would detect structural fatigue in bones that could be repaired with just a few weeks of rest.

A machine that does just that is already  in use at Santa Anita racetrack, and with its use catastrophic breakdowns have been dramatically reduced, but that machinery is cumbersome and very expensive.

The technology that Jeff Seder invented would result in a hand held, battery operated machine that would scan a leg in minutes and would only cost about $1,200 to buy.

A veterinarian could buy it and use it on his patients for for just a very small charge.

A racetrack could buy it and for no charge scan every horse entered in every race.

SEDER HAS a one page executive summary of this technology, NIBBS, or non-invasive bon strengthening scanning, that is available to anyone interested in investing.

Seder actually invented this technology in the 80s and secured five related patents.

A Johnson and Johnson heir, Curis Johnson IV, eventually funded it but developed it for human osteoporosis.

"They took it over, and I lost control," said Seder. "But I recently got the control back for the technology that provides a quick, cheap way of scanning a horse's leg. And we know it will work because it has already passed FDA clinics for human bone strength. I'm applying for a new patent."

"We just need about $900,000 to adapt it and take it to market," said Seder. "I'm resurrecting this now with the renowned performance horse veterinarian Dr.Daniel Marks."

Seder is the inventor and CEO of EQB, Inc., that analysis a horse's movement to predict his ability to be a successful racehorse, and Dr. Marks was the veterinarian for U.S. show jumping teams for many years, was the exclusive veterinarian for top trainers like Jonathan Sheppard and began what is now Sports Medicine Associates.

"Racetracks like Charlestown are where most of the breakdowns occur," said Patti Miller, the vice president of EQB who was in on the development of the original technology in the 80s. "The owners at tracks like that love their horses and would use this technology if it was readily available and inexpensive."

Seder explained that bone regularly weakens and strengthens.

Most catastrophic fractures are the result of fatigued bone, and the repair usually just takes a few weeks of rest.

Fatigued bone cannot be diagnosed by x-ray, and horses are not lame, so without this technology there is no way to predict that a horse will suffer a catastrophic breakdown.

This technology diagnoses fatigued bone and the severity of the fatigue, and it is inexpensive and quick..
