The show offers $1 million in prize money, and the highlight of the week is the $400,000 Hampton Classic 5* Grand Prix on Sunday, Aug. 31.
International jumper classes begin Thursday.
Goutal-Marteau was 1.4 seconds faster than second placed Sam Walker of Canada.
“I have a horse who rode a bigger stride than Sam’s,” Goutal-Marteau said. “My horse was fast everywhere; I was able to take advantage of his big stride from jumps one to two to three. Our whole team is so excited to be here for the Classic’s 50th anniversary. It’s just great to be back.”
Walker Funny on Star Semilly was second, clean in 41.838 seconds, and Uma O’Neill of New Zealand on Luigi D’Eclipse was third.
